Film Review by Jibril Naab: ‘Still Wylde’

STORY AND THEME

‘Still Wylde’ begins with a wave of anxiety, moves into hope, touches on grief, and finally settles into acceptance and a vision for a hopeful future. The story drew me in from the very beginning and held my attention all the way through. It opens with a woman discovering she’s unexpectedly pregnant, and together with her partner, they choose to keep the baby and consider starting a family, despite the uncertainties ahead.

The central message of the film is about accepting the loss of a loved one and coming to terms with the fading of a beautiful dream. There’s a powerful twist in the story that changes its entire trajectory, and it’s handled in a subtle but emotional way that defines the tone of the film.

CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES

The characters felt authentic and were very well-developed. The performances were convincing and emotionally grounded. The relationship between the couple was compelling, portraying a deep connection and shared vulnerability. No single character stood out negatively—instead, both leads complemented each other beautifully, adding to the realism of their situation.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

The cinematography was simple but effective. One shot that particularly stood out to me was the scene where the woman delivers the still baby alone in the bathroom. At first, the framing makes it seem like she’s going through it alone. However, the final shot in that scene reveals the man beside her, quietly supporting her through the pain. It’s a beautiful visual metaphor for presence and emotional support.

Another standout moment was during the pregnancy scan scene. Behind the characters, there’s a sign that reads “abortion”—a subtle but powerful piece of foreshadowing that hints at the outcome. The director’s attention to visual detail and framing added a lot to the storytelling.

SOUND AND MUSIC

The sound effects and dialogue were well-balanced and clear, helping to keep the emotional tone consistent. However, the film’s score didn’t leave a strong impression on me. While it served its purpose, it wasn’t particularly memorable or emotionally impactful.

OVERALL IMPACT

‘Still Wylde’ exceeded my expectations. Its greatest strengths are its storyline, character dialogue, and the emotional arc it carefully builds. The film made me feel a mix of emotions—anxiety, hope, grief, acceptance, and a quiet return to hope. I would definitely recommend it to others, especially because it tells a relatable story in a beautiful and non-cliché way. The message of enduring love and emotional resilience stays with you long after the film ends.
