A FILM ANALYSIS ON THE SHORT FILM "THE KATY UNIVERSE" DIRECTED BY:PATRICK MUHLBERGER. MICHAELLA TEYI -BFAMPP28024

The Katy Universe is a short film that feels funny, strange, and emotional all at once. From the very beginning, it grabs your attention with how Katy behaves at a wedding. She seems excited and full of energy, but as the film goes on, you can tell there’s something deeper going on inside her. It’s like she’s trying to stay happy, but something heavy is building up.
The whole story is about Katy making a phone call to her ex, but it’s not just a normal call. While she’s talking, she starts acting like she has powers and keeps mentioning the universe. It’s not clear if she’s just joking, breaking down emotionally, or if she actually believes what she’s saying. That’s what makes it so interesting you’re not really sure what’s real and what’s not. The message behind it feels deep. It shows how someone can feel small and confused in a big world, and how people sometimes hide their true feelings with laughter or weird behavior. There are also a few surprising moments that make you stop and think.
Katy herself felt very real. The way she talked, moved, and expressed her feelings made it easy to believe her. The actress, Mary Holland, did an amazing job. She made you laugh, feel sad, and connect with the character all in just a few minutes. Even though we didn’t see the person she was talking to, the call felt personal, like they had history. That made their connection feel strong.
The way the film was shot also made it special. The camera followed her in a way that matched her emotions. When she was dancing or acting powerful, the shots were smooth and playful. When things got intense, the camera moved faster and showed her feelings clearly. One part that really stood out was when some food started floating it was so unexpected but fit perfectly.
The colours and lighting also changed to match her mood, which helped tell the story without needing too many words. The sound and music added a lot too. The music wasn’t loud or dramatic, but it matched the mood perfectly. You could hear everything clearly, especially her voice and the background sounds. It felt calm when it needed to be, and emotional when things got deeper.
At the end of it all, the film was short but powerful. It started like a comedy but turned into something more meaningful. Its biggest strength is how it mixes laughter with emotion. Maybe the only weakness is that it can feel a little confusing at first, but once you understand it, it really sticks with you. It made me feel a lot happy, curious, even a bit emotional. I would definitely recommend it to others. It’s different, deep, and reminds us that people often have a lot going on inside, even if they look okay on the outside.
A FILM REVIEW ON THE SHORT FILM "THE KATY UNIVERSE".
BEGINNING
Katy Is Different
So picture this: a family wedding, everyone’s dressed up, music playing, grown-ups chatting.and there’s Katy, just doing her own thing. She’s not trying to be rude or cause drama she’s just different. She moves in her own way, talks like she’s in her own little world, full of ideas and feelings. And people? They look at her like, “What’s wrong with this girl?”But the truth is nothing’s wrong. Katy’s just not like everybody else. That’s how it starts you feel like this girl is special, even if the world doesn’t understand her yet.
MIDDLE
Can’t You Just Be Normal?
Then it gets tough. Katy is sent to live with family aunties, cousins, people who are used to order, quietness, rules. And they’re like, “Sit up straight.” “Fix your hair.” “Stop talking like that.”
They try to fix her like she’s broken or embarrassing.
And for a while Katy actually tries. She shrinks herself. She holds in the things that make her Katy. But it’s painful. You can feel it she’s not happy. It’s like she’s fading.
ENDING
This Is Who I Am
But Katy? She doesn’t stay small. She slowly finds her spark again. Maybe it’s through drawing, dancing, dreaming but she returns to her true self.
She doesn’t yell or fight back. She just quietly says,
“This is who I am. And I like me.”That’s the real win.By the end, Katy isn’t trying to be “normal.” She’s being Katy bold, soft, weird, magical. She makes space for her own little universe, and she owns it.
Antagonist:
In The Katy Universe, the antagonist isn’t a specific person but rather the world around Katy, especially the adults and their behavior. They act serious, awkward, and full of expectations that Katy doesn’t really understand. This grown-up environment feels strange to her and creates a kind of quiet conflict. It’s not evil or loud, but it makes Katy feel out of place, like she doesn’t belong.
Protagonist:
The protagonist is Katy, a young, emotional, and curious girl who sees the world differently. The story follows her actions, feelings, and point of view, especially at the wedding where she acts in her own unique way. We see things through her eyes, and that helps us understand and connect with her. She brings life, imagination, and energy to the film, which makes her the heart of the story.
