 FILM REVIEW ON STLL WLYDE

 BFAMPP28008-Bosomaa Christabel (group 2)

Still Wylde is a short film that explores the emotional highs and lows of pregnancy, miscarriage, and relationships with honesty, humour, and heart. The story follows Gertie, who finds out she’s unexpectedly pregnant. She and her boyfriend try to embrace  the surprise, until life surprises them again. What makes Still Wylde stand out is its raw and realistic portrayal of pregnancy and loss reflects not just her character’s strength, but also the filmmaker’s bold aim to break the silence At its core, Still Wylde is about a woman’s emotional journey through unexpected pregnancy and miscarriage. The film captures small, quiet moments that feel deeply real. The central message is clear: pregnancy and miscarriage are human experiences that should be talked about, not hidden. Gertie even says, “Nobody talks about it, but I’m going to talk about it,” which reflects not just her character’s strength, but also the filmmaker’s bold aim to break the silence around this topic.

. HaaGertie is the heart of the film. Her performance is emotional, relatable, and natural. She brings out both the awkward humour and the quiet heartbreak of her situation. Her boyfriend adds warmth and support while also showing his own confusion and vulnerability. The chemistry between them feels real, they’re quirky, flawed, and lovable. This makes their relationship believable and engaging. Their dialogue, filled with small jokes and tender moments, makes the film feel like you’re watching real people, not just the characters.

The Cinematography in Still Wylde is soft and intimate. The camera stays close, often using medium and close-up shots to highlight emotions on the characters’ faces. This visual closeness mirrors the emotional closeness of the story. Natural lighting creates a calm, almost cosy atmosphere that contrasts with the emotional weight of the story. Nothing feels overly stylised or dramatic, everything is done to support the realism of the film.

The sound design is subtle and quiet, which fits the personal and reflective tone of the film. Dialogue is at the center, and it sounds real.  Music is used lightly, allowing the emotional weight to come more from the acting and writing than from dramatic cues. The silence in some scenes even speaks louder than music, making me feel what Gertie is encountering.

Still Wylde is a short film that leaves a deep and lasting impression. It simply tells the truth about a difficult experience that many people go through with an unexpected pregnancy and also a miscarriage.

BREAKDOWN OF THE FILM

 Act 1( Discovering new life)

Gertie discovers she’s unexpectedly pregnant. While this news comes as a surprise, it isn’t entirely unwelcome. She tells her boyfriend, and instead of panic, the two decide to embrace the news and step into this new phase of life together.

Film Analysis:

  • The tone is set real, intimate, and slightly comedic.
  • The camera uses medium-close shots, keeping us emotionally close to Gertie.
  • Lighting is soft and natural, symbolizing warmth and possibility.
  • Themes introduced: unexpected change, emotional growth, and the beginnings of parenthood.

Act  2 (confrontation)

.

Just when the couple starts adjusting to the pregnancy, Gertie experiences a miscarriage. This moment of loss changes everything. The film does not dramatise this scene, instead, it treats it with quiet pain and sensitivity. Gertie is hit with a wave of emotions, from grief to confusion to numbness.

Film Analysis:

  • The tone shifts from hopeful to reflective, but without becoming overly dark
  • Gertie’s statement: “Nobody talks about it, but I’m going to talk about it” becomes a key moment. It shows her taking control of her story and breaking a social silence.
  • The film’s authentic dialogue helped me connect deeply to her pain.
  • Sound design here becomes quieter, with more silence to let the emotion breathe.

Act 3 (Resolution )

Instead of falling apart completely, Gertie finds strength through honesty. She begins to own her experience and talk about it openly. Her relationship with her boyfriend grows deeper as they go through this emotional journey together.

Film Analysis:

  • The final scenes are tender and introspective. There’s no dramatic fix, just a sense of quiet growth.
  • The cinematography remains close, keeping me inside Gertie’s emotional space.
  • Humour continues to be used gently, showing how Gertie copes with pain.
  • The story ends not with tragedy, but with a message of resilience and openness.

The final act confirms the film’s main theme: we must speak about difficult experiences, because through truth and connection, healing begins.

🎬 Final Thoughts

Still Wylde follows a simple but deeply emotional arc which is; hope, heartbreak ,honesty. Using the three-act structure, the director brings us on a journey of real-life pregnancy and miscarriage with care, humour, and sincerity. It’s a film that shows us that even in short form, storytelling can be powerful, personal, and healing.
